Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Summer - 05/01/2024 - 07/01/2024

International Students are required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan. The premium for the plan will be added to the student’s account. International students have the option to waive out of the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan if they have alternate insurance that provides comparable coverage to the University’s plan. Wavier requests must be made by the University’s deadline of 7/01/24. Late waiver requests will not be accepted. Your alternate insurance must meet the following criteria:

  1. Employer Sponsored group health plan OR
  2. U.S. government, foreign government, or embassy sponsored plan
  3. Coverage must be compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  4. Provides coverage for all Minimum Essential Benefits as required by the ACA with no annual limits.
  5. Contains no exclusions or waiting periods for pre-existing conditions.
  6. Covers 100% of Preventative Care as defined by the ACA.
  7. Out-of-Pocket Maximum cannot exceed $9,100 for an individual or $18,200 for a family.
  8. Imposes a deductible that does not exceed $500 per accident or illness. (Also applies to employer plans)
  9. Plan must provide full medical benefits in the state of Alabama.
  10. Policy documentation must be in English and all currency reflected in U.S. dollars.
  11. Repatriation expenses in the amount of no less than $25,000. Medical evacuation coverage in the amount of no less than $50,000.

Please note private or marketplace plans, out of state Medicaid, and travel plans will not be accepted by the University for wavier requests.
